A Letter from our Executive Director
Dear NCBA Friends and Faithful Partners,
We are grateful for the trust you place in the North Carolina Boys Academy and for the many ways you pray for, support, and walk alongside this ministry. It is in that spirit of transparency and partnership that we want to share an important decision made by the NCBA Board of Directors.
As Scripture encourages us:
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:3).
After a season of prayer, careful listening, and thoughtful discussion, the Board has unanimously approved the decision to sell the property located at 6692 Valwood Road, Conover, North Carolina.
This was an intentional thoughtful decision. The Valwood Road campus has been part of NCBA’s story, and we are thankful for the role it has played in shaping young men and families. At the same time, we believe the Lord is calling us to steward our resources in a way that strengthens the academy for the future.
As Jesus reminds us, “Which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost?” (Luke 14:28).
A Vision for the Next Decade
This decision flows from a clear, prayerfully discerned vision that will guide NCBA over the next ten years—a vision built on four foundational pillars:
1. Financial Freedom
“The borrower is the slave of the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).
This decision flows from a clear, prayerfully discerned vision that will guide NCBA over the next ten years—a vision built on four foundational pillars:
1. Financial Freedom
“The borrower is the slave of the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).
The equity from the sale of the Valwood Road property will be used to eliminate outstanding debt, allowing NCBA to move forward with freedom and confidence. This step ensures that the generosity of our supporters can be directed more fully toward students, programs, and mission rather than toward campus interest and long-term obligations.
2. Sustainability
“Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).
Living debt-free strengthens the long-term health of the academy. It allows NCBA to plan wisely, respondthoughtfully to changing circumstances, and remain steady and faithful for years to come.
3. Expansion
“Enlarge the place of your tent… do not hold back” (Isaiah 54:2).
After debt is retired, remaining equity will allow NCBA to complete essential development at Barrett Mountain, our future primary campus, and to invest carefully in future growth. These investments directly support the environment, safety, and programming that help young men grow in character, responsibility, and faith. This also includes NCGA and WIBA.
4. Organizational Excellence
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).
Organizational excellence means caring well for both the mission and the people who carry it forward. This includes strengthening leadership systems, improving operational clarity, and building a stable, career staff with adequate compensation. Well-supported staff bring consistency, longevity, and excellence to the daily work of mentoring and guiding students. As Scripture affirms, “The laborer deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7)
Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Confidence
The sale of 6692 Valwood Road represents a thoughtful step forward—an advance and not a retreat. It reflects our desire to align resources with mission and to position NCBA for a strong, sustainable future. The Board and staff believes this decision honors the trust you have placed in us and reflects faithful stewardship of God’s provision.
We are deeply thankful for your prayers, encouragement, and continued partnership. We move forward with confidence, trusting the Lord’s promise: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6).
Thank you for walking with us as we continue this journey together.
With sincere gratitude,
John Steigerwald

Does this mean NCBA is closing?
No. NCBA is not closing. The mission, programs, and commitment to serving young men remain fully intact. A new location does not change the CONTENT of building Earned Maturity and Emotional Intelligence in our students and families.

- Protection of the ministry’s interests
Is the property already under contract?
No. At this time, the property is not under contract. The realtor’s role is to market the property and bring forward qualified offers for Board review and approval.

- Evaluated for financial wisdom and alignment with NCBA’s mission
- Considered with legal and professional counsel as appropriate
No sale will be finalized without Board approval.
How will proceeds from the sale be used?
If and when a sale is completed, proceeds will be stewarded responsibly and may be used to:
- Eliminate debt - financial freedom
- Sustainability
- Expansion Support future facilities
- Organizational excellence - Invest more directly in student care and program effectiveness
The Board is committed to long-term impact over short-term relief.
Will donor-restricted gifts be affected?
No. All donor-restricted and designated funds remain protected and will continue to be used strictly according to donor intent.
How does this affect current students and staff?
The care of students and staff remains our top priority. Leadership is committed to:
- Maintaining program continuity
- Communicating clearly during the transition
- Ensuring stability and safety for those entrusted to NCBA
How long will the sales process take?
Real estate timelines vary. The Board and Realtor will move wisely, not hastily, allowing the process to unfold in a way that best serves the ministry.

Yes. Ongoing support is vital during this season. Continued giving:
